Day Trips From Madison- Devil's Lake

Posted In:

Sometimes you just need to get away from downtown Madison. One of the most popular places for Madisonians to escape to is Devil's Lake State Park.

Things to do at Devil's Lake

  • Camp! If you're itching to go camping, Devil's Lake has some great sites. Go solo, with your SO, or a group of friends and have a blast nearly any season. Don't forget to pack it in and pack it out!

  • Rock climb- While I am certainly not a climber myself, I have quite a few friends who rave about the climbing at Devil's Lake

  • Hike - people of all ages and fitness levels can hike around Devil's Lake, check out the park map before you head out

  • Swim - pack your swim suit and cool off in the lake. It can get pretty crowded so plan accordingly.

  • Cross Country Ski- Devil's Lake has over 5 miles of cross country ski trails. Check them out!

Tips and tricks:

Cell Phones- I can say with 99% confidence that you will not have signal at the park so if you are planning to meet people at Devil's Lake, embrace old school planning and decide on a time and exact location before you head out.

Parking fees- Purchasing an annual state park pass ($28/yr for a car with WI plates) is great if you see yourself going on multiple outdoor adventures but if a day pass makes sense for you, rates are $8 for a car with WI plates and $11 for non-resident plates.

Food- Bring food! There are a couple of locations where you can buy snacks and drinks but I highly recommend packing your own food and water.

Happy Adventuring!
